Bio

Talia Butery is in her second season as head coach of the Cobber women’s swimming and diving program. She became the fourth head coach in the history of the program in the fall of 2014.

Butery brings a history of local swimming and diving coaching experience to the job. She has been the head coach for the Fargo North High School girls’ swimming and diving team for the past 10 years and also during that time she has been the head coach for the F-M Gators swim club.

Butery has had a successful stint with the Fargo North high school team. She was named the North Dakota High School Swimming Coach of the Year in 2011, 2012 and 2013. She was also named the EDC Swimming Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012. Butery guided the Spartans to the North Dakota state championship in 2012. She has also helped Fargo North record a trio of second-place finishes at the state meet. Butery posted runner-up finishes in 2006 and 2007 and the Spartans finished second by a mere 14 points in 2011.

Butery laid the foundation for her successful coaching career as a student/athlete at Fargo North and the University of North Dakota. She was an All-American for the North Dakota track and field team. Butery finished third in the discus at the 2001 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Meet and still holds the UND school record in the discus.  

In addition to her success with the Fargo North girls’ swimming and diving team and F-M Gators, Butery has also had coaching stints as an assistant for the Moorhead High School boys’ swimming and diving team, assistant coach for the Fargo North boys’ and girls’ track and field teams and the Fargo South girls’ track and field team. Butery was the head coach of the Fargo South girls’ track and field team from 2002-05 where she helped the Bruins finish second at the state high school meet in 2005.

Butery lives in Fargo with her husband Eric and children Merritt and Micah.
