Cobbers Start 2023 Against St. Benedict

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (1/14/23)---Concordia returned to competition after the holiday break, and a training trip to Florida, and fell to St. Benedict at the SJU Sprint Invite.

The meet was supposed to be a triangular with the Bennies and Hamline, but the Pipers had to cancel at the last minute.   

The Cobbers were able to post seven Top 4 individual finishes at the meet despite having to fight through the fatigue of having just completed 2-a-day training sessions in Florida.

Sophomore Hailey Jaeger and freshman Haley Juetten both came away with a pair of Top 4 finishes on Saturday. Jaeger was third in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard individual medley, while Juetten was third in the 50-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Jaeger earned her top finishes by posting a time of 58.56 in the 100-yard freestyle. She was only 1.20 seconds off of the top spot in the event. Jaeger then clocked a 1:09.45 in the 100-yard IM.

Juetten touched the wall in a time of 35.94 in the 50-yard breaststroke to claim third place, and then recorded a mark of 1:21.18 in the 100-yard version of the same event to place fourth.

Senior Jess Bray had the other swimming Top 5 finish for the Cobbers. She posted a time of 30.55 in the 50-yard butterfly and finished in third place. She was only 0.43 of a second out of second place and .57 of a second shy of the winning time.

Sophomore diver Kiernan Darling was third in the 1-meter event and fourth in the 3-meter competition. She scored 179.00 points in the 1-meter which was 7.5 points out of first place. Darling then came through with 156.30 points in the 3-meter competition.

The Cobbers had a pair of 3rd-place finishes in the relay events. The 200-yard freestyle quartet of Camille Gunderson, Jaeger, Bray and Kaitlin Cramer swam a 1:51.81, while Gunderson, Jaeger and Bray teamed with Juetten to place third in the 200-yard medley relay at 2:04.40.

Concordia won't have far to travel for their next meet. The Cobbers will head across 8th street to compete against MSU Moorhead in a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m.
