Young Cobbers Gather Top 3 Finishes At Opener

ABERDEEN, S.D.  (11/08/13)—Concordia sophomore Joleen Baker helped the Cobbers kick off the 2013-14 season as she earned the event win in the team's 145-60 loss at Northern State on Friday.

Baker swam a 26.55 in the 50-yard freestyle and won the event by .21 of a second to record the only victory of the day. Despite only one event win, Concordia did have eight other top 3 individual finishes at the dual meet. Baker also placed second in 100-yard freestyle in a time of 58.43.

Freshmen Madeline Johnson and Joleen Plekkenpol had second-place finishes for the Cobbers. Johnson swam a 1:07.41 in the 100-yard backstroke to earn her runner-up finish while Plekkenpol was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:49.54. Plekkenpol also had a third-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (12:09.10).

Kelsey Appert was the lone junior or senior to record a top 3 finish at the meet. She raced to a 2:16.55 in the 200-yard freestyle and captured third place.

Katrina Teskey, Samantha Murray and Megan Obrecht were the final three Concordia athletes to finish in the top 3 in an event on Friday. Teskey was third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:11.55, Murray clocked a 6:08.45 was third in the 500-yard freestyle while Obrecht placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:16.28.

Concordia will have 24hours before the 2013-14 home opener. The Cobbers will host cross-town rival MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.
