Bonus-Point Saturday In Ohio

SANDUSKY, OHIO (12/17/22)---It was bonus point Saturday in Ohio for the Cobbers. Concordia won 23 individual matches on their way to posting a 3-1 record at the Kalahari Duals in Sandusky, Ohio – and 22 of the 23 victories were bonus-point wins.

The Cobbers opened the day by winning four individual matches in a 28-19 loss to No.14-ranked Loras. Of those four wins, two were by a pin and the third was a major decision. Concordia then rattled off wins against host Heidelberg, Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) and Adrian (Mich.), and all 19 of their individual match victories were from a major decision, technical fall or pin.

The three consecutive wins to finish off the duals day brings Concordia's record to 5-2 on the year. Their only two losses have both come against teams ranked in the Top 15 of the nation.

The Cobbers had six wrestlers who went unbeaten on the day. No.7-ranked Ty Bisek, Cade Lundeen and Gabe Zierden led CC by posting wins in all four matches. Jacob Prunty went 3-0, while Ayden Friese was 2-0 and Kellen Schauer claimed a victory in his only match of the day.

In their match with nationally-ranked Loras, Concordia took 13-6 lead after a pin by by Bisek at 133, a 4-3 decision at Lundeen at 141 and then a pin by Prunty at 149. CC then dropped the next four matches before Zierden claimed a win by pin at 197.

The second dual featured the Cobbers and Heidelberg both winning five matches. The difference in the 30-22 for Concordia was that all five of their wins came by pin. Bisek and Prunty all earned the 6-point team wins in consecutive matches. Elijah Hunt then followed with a pin in only 43-seconds at 165, before Zierden put his opponent's shoulders on the mat in the final minute of the first period.

The Cobbers then won seven bonus-point matches in their 38-18 cruise over Mount St. Joseph. Once again CC trailed 6-0 after having to forfeit at 125, but then won five of the next six and seven of the next eight to roll to the 20-point win.

Bisek, Lundeen, Hunt and Zierden all grabbed wins by a pin, while Schauer recorded a 16-0 technical fall in his only match of the day at 149. Alex McPhee and Friese came through with their first wins of the day. McPhee posted a 12-0 major decision win at 157 which gave CC a 21-6 lead, and then Friese sealed the win with a 16-0 technical fall victory at 184.

Bisek and Zierden completed their quartet of pin wins in Concordia's 34-15 win over Adrian in the final match of the competition. They were a part of seven individual wins for the Cobbers. Hunt came through with the quickest pin of the day when he finished off his opponent in only 36-seconds. The other four CC wins came by major decision. Lundeen, Prunty and Friese capped their unbeaten days with the 4-point team wins, while Tyler Bents came through with a 13-4 victory at 157.

Bisek, Lundeen and Zierden all upped their overall win total to a team-leading 13 on the season. Bisek is 13-1, while Lundeen and Zierden both moved to 13-2.

Prunty is close behind the trio with 12 victories on the year. He is 12-5 and has won 9 of his last 11 bouts.

Hunt moves to 9-4 on the year – and of his 13 matches, eight have been settled by a pin. Hunt now has four pins that all came in the first 50-seconds of action, and a fifth that was timed at 64-seconds.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a extended period of time away from the mat for the holiday break. The Cobbers return to action when they host Northern State on Friday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. That dual was originally scheduled for Nov.10 but got postponed due to bad weather.
