National Champion Named Assistant

MOORHEAD, Minn. (8/30/16)—Head Coach Phil Moenkedick announced that Quincy Osborn has been hired as the full-time assistant coach. Osborn fills the position vacated by Moenkedick after he was hired as the head coach.

Osborn brings a championship background to the position. He was an NCAA Division III national champion while wrestling for Augsburg and was a two-time Division I NCAA national meet participant at the University of Minnesota.    

"Quincy has performed at the highest level and understands what is necessary to compete for a national championship," stated Moenkedick. "His unbelievable experience as a wrestler and as a coach will be a huge asset for our student/athletes."

In addition to his national caliber experience as a wrestler in college, Osborn has also gained experience as a coach. He has over eight years of collegiate coaching experience and was the head coach at Lakeland College (Wis.) for the 2014-15 season. Last year returned to his hometown of Grand Rapids to teach for the Itasca area schools and was also the assistant wrestling coach at Grand Rapids High School.

Moenkedick enthusiastically explained the hire by stating, "it's not often you can hire an assistant that has the experience that Quincy has. He will be a huge role model for our wrestlers and the knowledge he brings to the wrestling room will help our team compete at the top of national level." 

As a wrestler Osborn has been highly successful at every level of competition. He was a two-time state champion and also had a state runner-up finish at Grand Rapids High School. He went 46-0 in his senior year and recorded an impressive 87-2 record in his final two seasons of high school.

Osborn started his collegiate journey by wrestling at the University of Minnesota. He lettered three times for the Gophers and qualified twice for the NCAA national championship meet. Osborn finished fifth at 149 pounds at the Big Ten championship meet in 2005. He then transferred to Augsburg where he won the 2006-07 NCAA Division III national title at 141 pounds with a record of 44-2.

"I am excited to continue my coaching career at Concordia," said Osborn. "I am very familiar with the program and have watched it grow to a national contender since Clay (former coach Clay Nagel) took over and then when Matt (Nagel) continued to help the team get to the top 20 in the country."

Osborn began his coaching journey at Augsburg as an assistant coach. He coached with the Auggies for two years and then went on to become the assistant at Division I Ohio University. He stayed at Ohio University for four years and then became the assistant coach at the State University of New York at Buffalo which is also a Division I program. Osborn earned his first head coaching position in 2014 when he was hired by Lakeland.

"I am a high-energy coach," added Osborn. "I love to be in the wrestling room and help student/athletes go through the highs and lows as they try to reach their goals. "I can't wait to help the Concordia wrestlers realize they don't have to be satisfied with earning All-American honors but can set their sights at getting to the top of the podium."

Osborn earned his bachelor's degree in history from Augsburg in 2009 and then went on to obtain his master's degree in coaching education from Ohio University in 2011.

Osborn is married to wife Hannah and the couple has a daughter named Cleopatra.
