Cobbers Drop A Pair In 2024 Home Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/09/24)---After opening the season with 20 games on the road, Concordia was finally able to step onto the field at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. The Cobbers hosted St. Benedict in the home opener and lost 12-1 and 10-1.

Game 1: Concordia 1, St. Benedict 12
The Cobbers' lone run in the opener came in the third inning when sophomore Reese Hauck led off the frame with a double into the right-center field gap. The 2-bagger was Hauck's fourth of the season, which is second most by a Cobber player on the year.

Hauck advanced to third base on a fly out to right field in the next at-bat and came around to score after Jillian Martinez used her speed to force an errant throw from the catcher that went past first base. The RBI was Martinez' fourth of the year.

Hauck's fifth-inning double was the only hit in the game for the Cobbers.

Lauren Staples and Kayley Bosc split the pitching duties for the Cobbers in Game 1. Staples started in the circle and went 1.2 innings and then Bosc finished off the final 3.1 frames.

Game 2: Concordia 1, St. Benedict 10
The second game of the doubleheader was tied at 1-1 until the top of the fourth inning when the Bennies plated a single run which went on to be the game-winning score.

The Cobbers got on the board first when they scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The run was scored after there were two outs in the frame. Karissa Finnigan started the 2-out rally with a single up the middle. She moved up to second on Danielle Lyon single that found its way through the left side of the infield. Jocelyn Maki brought Finnigan home when she hit a flare to left field that eluded the CSB outfielder.

The three hits in the first frame were half of CC's offensive production in the game. Finnigan and Lyon led the Cobbers in Game 2. Each player had two hits and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Emma Bowman had the other hit in the contest.

Mallory Leitner and Finnigan combined to pitch the full six innings. Leitner pitched into the fifth frame, wound up with 4.1 innings pitched. Finnigan went the final 1.2 innings for CC.
