Costly 49 Scoreless Minutes In Conference Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/14/14)—Concordia gave up a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes of play against Gustavus and lost 2-1 in the conference opener for both teams. The Cobbers held the Gusties scoreless for the final 49 minutes of play but couldn't come up with a game-tying goal despite outshooting GAC 32-15.

All the scoring in the two-game series opener took place in the opening 13:25 of the first period. Gustavus got on the board before most of the audience was in their seats. The Gusties scored on their second shot of the game at the 1:29 mark.

The Gusties added to their lead in the 11th minute of play when they scored on the power play at 10:55. The goal would be the eventual game-winning goal and would be the only shot on the power play chance for GAC.

Concordia got to within one goal when Garrett Hendrickson scored his second goal of the season less than three minutes later. Hendrickson's goal at 13:35 brought the Cobbers to within one goal and set the stage for two dramatic periods. Jordie Bancroft was credited with his second assist of the year on the only goal of the game for CC.

The Cobbers would outshoot Gustavus 30-8 in the final two periods but could never get the puck past Gustie goalie Erik Johnson. CC had a single power play attempt in each period but still couldn't score. The Cobbers had 12 shots on the power play attempt in the second period but were still held off the board.

Concordia was 0-for-2 for the game on man-advantage situations for the game while Gustavus scored on their only power play attempt in the game.

Freshman goalie Alex Reichle made his second straight in goal for CC. He stopped 13 shots and has only allowed three goals in his first two collegiate games. Johnson was stellar all night long and finished with 31 saves.

The same two teams will complete the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
