Weekend Sweep Brushes Cobbers Into Third Place

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/21/23)---Concordia entered the weekend on a 6-match losing streak and in a 4-way tie for fifth place in the MIAC standings.

The Cobbers left the weekend on a 2-match win streak and in a 3-way tie for third place.

Oh, what a difference 21 hours can make.

Concordia completed the weekend sweep by cruising to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-17) win over Augsburg, who entered the day in fourth place – one spot ahead of the Cobbers.

Concordia is now 5-3 in conference play and are tied with the Auggies and St. Kate's for third place in the MIAC standings with three matches left in the regular season in the race for the Top 6 playoff spots.

The Cobbers are 13-11 overall. Augsburg drops to 13-12 in all matches and a similar 5-3 in the league.

Concordia carried over its momentum from Friday night's 5-set win over Bethel by turning a 10-8 deficit into a 17-11 lead in the opening set. CC finished the first set on a 17-6 streak and never looked back.

The won the first five points in the second set, never trailed and came away with the 25-21 win. The third set was almost a carbon copy (Google it) of the first set. The Cobbers trailed early, tied the set in the middle and then ran away late. Concordia finished the match with a 10-6 run.          

The Cobbers ended the day with a .205 attack percentage and the defense held Augsburg to a .038 mark.

Mallory Leitner led CC with 12 kills on 31 total attacks. Kaia Lill recorded 34 assists and a team-high nine digs.

Karlie Goschen and Hanna Mooney also had nine digs as the Cobber defense was able to continually keep the Auggie attack attempts alive and get the ball to Lill.

Hannah Keil and Madison Kisch added seven kills each. Keil added three blocks and Kisch came away with two blocks.
