Well-Traveled Cobbers Start Slow, Fall To Valley City St.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/05/23)---Call it jet lag, call it a Texas tumble, but less than 48 hours after returning from their trip to the Lone Star State, Concordia stepped on the court against a quality Valley City State team and lost 3-1 (25-11, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21).

THE 411: The Cobbers stumbled out of the gate by only hitting .026 in the first set. They trailed 5-3 after the first eight points, but then gave up a 8-0 run and could never recover. The final three sets were basically even, with the Vikings able to pull out set wins in the third and fourth bouts by owning the final four points. The third and fourth sets were both tied at 21-21 before VCSU won four straight points to take the set and the match.

THE NEXT LEVEL: The Vikings hit .257 for the match as compared to .165 for the Cobbers. Concordia was able to stop the attack of sophomore Danielle Hager, who put up a career-high 18 kills and posted a lofty .484 attack percentage.

THE NUMBERS GAME: Valley City had a 60-53 edge in kills, but the Cobbers posted three more total attack attempts (182-179) for the match. Concordia also had one more dig during the match than the Vikings (79-78).

INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING: Concordia had three players finish with a double-digit kill total. Brook Carney led the way with 12 winners, while Mallory Leitner and Hannah Keil had 11 kills each. Carney has now had at least 10 kills in the last four matches. She leads the team with 62 winners, which is tied for third most in the MIAC.

Kaia Lill dished out another 46 assists in the match, the second time this season she has gone over the 40-assist mark. Lill leads the MIAC in assists with 186.

Chloe Markovic led a group of four Cobber players who all had at least 12 digs in the game. She came away with a team-high 22 digs and is third in the conference this year with 78 digs. Hanna Mooney finished with 16 digs while Karlie Goschen and Keil had a dozen each.

UP NEXT: Concordia will head to Superior, Wis. for a weekend tournament. The Cobbers will face Bethany Lutheran on Friday, then host UW-Superior and Northland on Saturday.
