Attacking Cobbers Sweep Crown

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/05/21)---Concordia gave up the first three points in its non-conference match with Crown, but then ran off seven straight and went on a 14-point run at the end of the first set which helped the Cobbers sweep of Crown (25-7, 25-14, 25-7).

The sweep is the second of the year against the Storm. The win also ends a 3-match losing streak for the Cobbers and brings their season record to 6-10. The victory was also the first of the year at home for CC. Concordia is now 1-2 in Memorial Auditorium.

It took Concordia three points to get into the match, but once they started to attack, they finished with a .400 hitting percentage in the first set. The Cobber defense also tightened down and held Crown to a minus-.083 mark in the first set.

The Cobbers had double-digit kill totals in all three sets, while the Storm had four winners in the first set, four in the second and seven in the third. The 15 total kills are the second fewest by a Cobber opponent this season. CC held Crown to only 13 winners in their first match of the year on Sept. 4.


Concordia finished the match with a .204 attack percentage, and held the Storm under .000 for the three sets. CC is now 3-0 when it hits above .200 for the match. Crown ended the night with a minus-.017 hit mark. That is the lowest for a Cobber opponent this season.

The Cobbers were able to get 14 players into the third-to-last non-conference match of the year. CC had nine players record kills and were led by sophomore Peyton Selle. Selle had 10 kills and hit .389. Freshman Hannah Keil recorded nine winners and posted a match-high .571 attack percentage.             

Junior Brook Carney had a team-high 14 digs to go with six kills. Senior Casey Coste came up with 12 digs and three service aces.   

Mariah Iwen controlled the CC offense with 17 assists.

UP NEXT: Concordia will hit the road for a pair of MIAC matches over the weekend. CC will play at St. Scholastica on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and then face Macalester in St. Paul on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
