Fuel Gauge Reads "E" In Fifth Set

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/04/14)—Concordia ran out of gas in the fifth set against St. Mary's and lost 13-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-27, 15-5 in the second match of a home-and-home conference doubleheader weekend.

The Cobbers spent all their energy in a thrilling 27-25 win in the fourth set. Concordia saved two match points and then rallied to win the final two points. The grueling win in the fourth didn't bode well for CC as they gave up the first three points of the fifth set and then fell behind 8-3.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to the .500 mark at 9-9. The Cobbers are now 2-3 in the MIAC. St. Mary's wins for the seventh time in the last eight matches and is now 12-6 in all matches and 3-2 in league play.

The Cobbers took the first set of the match by holding St. Mary's to a minus-.026 hitting percentage. The Cardinals hit under .200 for the first four sets but then exploded in the fifth set to record a .400 attack percentage.

Concordia hit .267 in the opening set and then fell off to under .200 for the next three sets before recording a minus-.091 attack percentage in the final set..


Concordia vs. St. Mary's Match Highlights


Concordia had three players with 10-plus kills for the second straight match. Senior Kynndyl Ross came away with a team-high 15 winners. Olivia Wangensteen recorded her second straight double digit kill total while Kathleen Lippert added 11 kills. Wangensteen also had 24 digs and Lippert earned four blocks.


Jena Klaphake led the team with a match-high 27 assists and Alyssa Schmidt posted a match-high 26 digs.

Concordia will look to get back above .500 when they travel to St. Paul to take on St. Catherine on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
