School Record, MIAC Champion & CC Top 5 Marks - Oh My

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/11/14)—A school record, another conference champion and a plethora of program Top 5 marks were the highlights for Concordia on the final day of the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet.

The Cobber 4x100-meter relay team broke the school record to kick start the Cobbers on Saturday and then first-year thrower Genevieve Gruba won the javelin as the two event performances helped CC finish sixth in the final team standings.

Concordia finished with 74 team points which was 19 more than they accumulated at the 2023 meet. The sixth-place finish is also one higher from last season.

Day 2 opened with the 4x100-meter relay and the team of Andie Sandman, Emily Rengo, Piper Osborne and Kyla Nygaard set the tone for the Cobbers on the day. The quartet clocked a final time of 48.64 which was good for fourth place and broke the 21-year-old record of 48.78 set by Kari Rosenfeldt, Annie Knierim, Kelli Tranby and Angie Pfeiffer.

At the same time that the CC relay team was creating school history, Gruba was at the javelin area cruising to a win in her very first MIAC Championship Meet. Gruba entered the competition seeded No.1 and made sure no other athlete in the event had upset notions. She trailed heading into the third round and jumped to the top of the leaderboard with a toss of 127-01. That mark would stand up but Gruba decided to do that three feet better on her final attempt and won the event with a distance of 130-07.

Junior Regan Anderson's PR mark in the javelin gave the Cobbers unexpected team points. She entered the day seeded ninth and unleashed a throw of 121-08 on her second attempt to jump into fifth place in the final event standings.

The other team points in field events came from Osborne, who finished seventh in the triple jump. Her top distance of the day came on her very first attempt. She was able to post a mark of 35-04.50 which got her into the finals. That distance was a season-best mark by .50 of an inch.

Osborne and Rengo also posted personal best times in the 200 meters to post Top 5 finishes. Rengo came home with a mark of 25.10 which was good for fourth place. Osborne crossed the line in 25.41 and was fifth. Rengo's time is the second fastest in school history and Osborne moves into the No.4 spot on the CC all-time list.

Rengo was part of a trio of Cobber track athletes who all finished in the Top 9 of the 400 meters. Rengo recorded her second Top 4 finish of the day. She cruised to a 57.42 and was third in the event. That time is the third fastest in Cobber history.

Nygaard and Maddie Guler were the other two 400-meter finalists. Nygaard came home in 57.60 and was fourth, while Guler placed ninth with a time of 1:00.08. Nygaard's finishing time is the sixth fastest in school history.

The top track finish on Saturday was turned in by MIAC high jump champion Jenna Kalevik. Kalevik qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday and then raced to a time of 14.68. It's the first time in her career that she broke the 15-second mark in her career and is the second fastest in CC history.

Sandman was the other Cobber individual track athlete who scored team points on Day 2. She was fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.61. That mark is a season-best and is No.8 on the Cobber all-time list.
