Hovland's Double Helps Cobbers Kick Off 2022 Season

MOORHEAD, Minn. (01/22/22)---Cayle Hovland started her senior season by winning the shot put and weight throw competitions at the season-opening Cobber Open, and helped Concordia finish second in the 5-team event.

Hovland was one of three Cobber athletes to claim event wins on the day. Isabel Fredrickson won the 600 meters, while freshman Drew Frolek crossed the line first in the mile run.

Hovland began her 2022 campaign with her best shot put mark of the meet. She uncorked a distance of 41-05.00 on her intitial attempt which would end up being her best of the day and win her the event by almost two feet. Hovland then crossed over to the weight throw circle and, like the shot put, won the event on her very first throw. She posted a mark of 51-0.00 which was only 3.25 inches ahead of the runner-up finisher.

Both of Hovland's winning marks are second best in the MIAC after the opening weekend of the indoor season. Her shot put distance is 2.75 feet behind the top mark and her weight throw distance is 2.75 feet away from the No.1 mark. Hovland also starts the year in the Top 30 of Division III in the shot put.

Hovland also led a trio of Concordia throw athletes who all had solid starts to their year. Allyson Kangas finished third in both the shot put and weight throw, while Jacey Schlosser was fifth in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw. The marks put up by Kangas and Schlosser in both events are also both in the Top 7 of the conference.

Fredrickson and Frolek picked up where they left off in the cross country season. The duo led the Cobber cross country team at the conference and regional meets in the fall, and they both picked up event wins in the 2022 opener.

Fredrickson clocked a 1:45.15 in the 600 meters which edged out teammate Eden Smith. Frolek earned her win in the most popular women's race of the meet. She bettered the 15-athlete field with a time of 5:27.34. That mark is No.13 on the school's all-time list for the event.

Peyton Selle
, who won the heptathlon at last spring's MIAC Outdoor Meet, started her sophomore season by posting MIAC Top 5 marks in two different events. She placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.74 and was third in the high jump at 5-0.25. Selle's time in the hurdles is the 12th fastest in school history and No.5 on the list in the MIAC this year. She opens the season second in the high jump.

Concordia won the only contested relay event at the meet. The quartet of Fredrickson, Frolek, Smith and Kelly Lorenz clocked a 4:24.10 to win the race by 7 seconds.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will start their indoor grind by heading north to Grand Forks to compete in the UND Open on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 12 p.m.
