Cobbers' Win Streak Comes To An End

MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/26/23)---Concordia had its 3-match win streak come to an and as they dropped a pair of decisions against two of the top 5 teams in the conference at home over the weekend.

The Cobbers fell 8-1 to St. Benedict on Saturday, and then lost 9-0 to unbeaten Gustavus on Sunday. The Bennies and Gusties are a combined 8-1 in league play this year.

The two defeats move the Cobbers' overall record to 9-9 on the season. CC is now 2-6 in MIAC play and in seventh place in the league standings.

The match against St. Benedict on Saturday was closer than the final team score indicated, with all three doubles matches being decided by three or fewer games.

The Cobber No.3 doubles team of Emily Savageau and Julia Wolf went to the tie-breaker before being edged 8-7 (4). Anna Hacker and Lizzie Allan also went to the wire in their match at No.2 doubles. They went back-and-forth before finally losing 8-6. The No.1 doubles duo of Raquel Egge and Erin Borchard lost 8-5 in another close-fought battle.

Egge would exact her revenge in singles play. She rallied after the doubles bout to post the lone win of the day for CC. She won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at No.1 singles to pick up her 10th win of the year. She is the third Cobber player to have a double-digit win total in singles play.

The next closest singles bout for Concordia came at No.2 singles where sophomore Mary Skorich lost in the tie-breaker in the first set 7-6 (4) and then dropped a 6-4 decision in the second set.

The Cobbers ran into the perennial league power Gusties on Sunday morning. CC lost the No.1 and No.3 doubles matches 8-2. Concordia's closest singles match came at No.6 singles where Borchard fell 6-2, 6-4.
