"Firsts" Goals Send Cobbers To A Win Over Augsburg

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/07/23)---Concordia used a pair of first-half goals to beat Augsburg 2-1. The Cobbers got "firsts" goals from Kylie Osborn and Kara Ellis as they beat the Auggies for the first time since 2014.

The win is the fifth of the season for Concordia, who moves to 5-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play. The victory also jumps the Cobbers into a tie for fourth place in the league standings.

Both of the Cobbers' goals came from crossing passes and both were 1-timed into the net. The first strike came on a serve from junior midfielder Chloe Sollom. She played the ball across the goal from the right side of the penalty area, where Osborn redirected the ball into the left corner of the net.

The goal was Osborn's first of the season and gave Concordia the 1-goal lead at 19:51. Sollom earned her team-leading third assist of the year.

Ellis would double the Cobbers' lead 15 minutes later when she netted her first collegiate goal. Ellis 1-timed a pass from Sophia Robinson that found its way into the back of the net. Ellis' game-winning goal came at 34:48.

Senior goalie Bre Nelson made sure that Concordia would take the 2-0 lead into the halftime break. She made three key saves on breakaway attempts in the first half.

The game took a turn for Augsburg when they scored their only goal in the 12th minute of the second half. They were awarded a penalty kick after a Cobber defender dragged down an Auggie attacker on a free kick as the Augsburg player was tried to break free in the penalty area.

The goal at 56:51 gave Augsburg some energy and put the Cobbers in defend the lead mode.

The Auggies would have two more chances in the final 15 minutes of play. Nelson made a huge save on a driven shot as she jumped and then extended to turn the ball off the crossbar and out of play. The second quality chance was turned aside by senior defender Emily Larsen. The Auggies collected the ball after a corner kick and an attacker drove a low shot that beat Nelson but Larsen, who was standing on the goal line, put her foot through the ball and cleared the danger.

Augsburg held a 20-11 advantage in total shots and a 12-6 margin in shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks in the contest.
