Unkind Ending

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/05/22)---Sometimes soccer can be a cruel game. On Wednesday, the game turned against the Cobbers in final 30-seconds of play and handed them a 1-0 loss.

Concordia battled with regionally-ranked St. Benedict for 89 of the 90 minutes only to have an unfortunate goal with :20-seconds left on the clock drop them to a 1-0 loss.

The loss is the second straight 1-goal defeat for the Cobbers who are now 3-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the MIAC. The Bennies extend their win streak to six games and are now 8-3-0 in all games and 4-1-0 in league play.

The two teams hosted a defensive match-up in the first half with only three total shots between the two teams being recorded in the first 45 minutes of play.

The second half was more the same with each defense tightening when the ball got played into the final third of play. The Bennies were able to gain an edge in the offensive zone in the latter half of the second period, and wound up outshooting CC 6-2 in the final half.

The game was decided on a seemingly harmless play in the final 30-seconds. St. Ben's was able to get possession of the ball 35 yards out from the Cobber goal. The CSB attacker took a couple of dribbles and fired a routine shot on goal that somehow floated into the right corner of the net.

The goal at 89:40 was the latest game winner allowed by the Cobbers this year.

Concordia had shots in the game with Chloe Sollom, Sophia Robinson, Clara Rooney and Samantha Holmberg recording one shot each.

Sophomore Kaitlin Petrich made seven saves in the game, including denying a breakaway attempt in the final 10 minutes of play.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have an away-and-home weekend. The Cobbers will play at Gustavus on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. and then return home to host Viterbo in CC's final non-conference game of the year on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
