Fast Start But No Hollywood Finish

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/13/15)—Concordia started fast but couldn't hold off regionally-ranked Augsburg as the Cobbers fell 2-1 in overtime to the Auggies in Minneapolis.

The Cobbers almost created a Hollywood-type scoresheet. Concordia scored at the 6-minute mark when sophomore midfielder Alexandra Jones netted her first collegiate goal to give the Cobbers an early 1-0 lead.

Emily Wendorff earned the assist on the play after she fed the ball to Jones who fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the top part of the net. For Wendorff it was her third assist of the season and team-leading 15th point of the year.

Concordia carried the 1-0 lead into the break. Both teams had two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of the game as play was focused in the middle of the field with little possession around the penalty areas for either team.

Augsburg wasted little time in the second half to pull even with Concordia. The Auggies claimed the game-tying goal in the third minute of play when an attacker passed the ball across the top of the 6-yard box to an open Auggie who put the ball in the net.

Once again neither team was able to come up with many shots on goal. Augsburg held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal for the second 45 minutes.

Like the game-tying goal, the game-winning goal came in the first five minutes after the restart. Augsburg earned a throw-in deep in the Concordia defensive end and the ensuing throw was met by an Auggie player who fired a shot into the net from 20 yards out.

The loss ends Concordia's three-game win streak and pushed them into eighth place in the league standings with four games left in the league schedule. CC is now 3-4-0 in MIAC play and 7-6-0 overall. Augsburg improves to 10-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in league play. The Auggies are currently tied for second place in the conference standings.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will host a key MIAC match-up on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. The Cobbers will square off against St. Benedict who is currently in a four-way tie for fourth place in the standings.
