1-0 Win Puts Cobbers IN MIAC Driver's Seat

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (10/13/12)—A late first-half goal on Saturday at Bethel might be the decisive blow for the No.23-ranked Cobbers in their race for the 2012 MIAC regular-season championship. Sophomore Marta Prosinski headed home the only goal of the game to give Concordia a 1-0 win over the Royals.

The two teams entered the game in the No.1 and No.2 spots in the conference and were playing for the top spot in the league. With the win Concordia is now 6-1 in the MIAC and two games clear of the rest of teams in the conference. CC wins for the fifth time in the past six games and is now 9-3-1 overall. Bethel entered the game in sole possession of second place and is now in a three-way tie for second. BU loses for the first time in seven games and falls to 4-2-2 in league games and 7-5-3 overall.

The difference in the game was Concordia's ability to get more dangerous chances and not allow Bethel to get open looks at the CC goal. The Cobbers outshot 13-12 in total shots but the Royals put all 12 shots on frame and had a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Prosinki picked the perfect time to score her first goal of the year. The Cobbers had a pair off shots sail wide just before the game winner which came off a crossing pass from All-American Sarah Rounds. The goal at 43:53 gave CC a one-goal lead heading into the break and forced Bethel to chase the game in the entire second half.

Concordia gave up three shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of play but goalie Ali Nelson wasn't challenged to come up with a spectacular save to preserve the shutout. In the end she made 12 saves to record her fifth shutout in the past nine games. It was her sixth overall shutout of the season and 35th of her career. She now needs one more to tie the school record for most career shutouts.

The Cobbers will have a short turnaround before their next game. Concordia will host a regional battle when they square off against regionally-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m.
