Success Is Simple; New Uniforms = Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/16/23)---Forget practice, preparation and hard work. If a team truly wants to be successful, all they have to do is buy new uniforms.

The Cobbers unveiled their new away jerseys on Saturday and promptly went out and posted their largest goal total and win of the season. Concordia scored at least two goals in all three periods as they styled their way past Wis.-Superior 7-3.

The seven goals scored by Concordia are the most this season and the most since the second game of last season when they beat Finlandia 8-0.

The win gives the Cobbers the sweep in the series against the Yellowjackets. It's the first sweep of the year for CC and the first since the two games with Finlandia last year.

The series finale with Superior didn't start out like a dominating victory. The Cobbers gave up the first goal and trailed 1-0 midway through the opening frame.

The game turned in the 13th minute when Concordia scored the first of six consecutive goals.

First-year forward Taylor Severson opened up the 6-pack when she scored an even-strength goal at 12:44. Grace Doerring and Jaclyn Lloyd assisted on Severson's second goal of the weekend.

Senior Jerica Friese staked the Cobbers to a 2-1 lead when she netted the first of two goals on the day only 3:12 after Severson's strike. Abbey Reule was credited with her second assist of the 2-game series.

Concordia held a 2-1 lead and then exploded for three goals in the second period.

Doerring scored her first goal of the year on the power play at 3:19, and then McKenzie Oelkers and Friese scored goals 24 seconds apart midway through the period. Doerring scored on a 1-timer from the left faceoff circle, Oelkers came through with a snipe on a 2-on-1 break and Friese scored on a putback from on top of the crease.

Paige Hanson, Livia Hoff and Taylyn Cope would get on the scoresheet with assists on the Cobbers' trio of second-period goals.

Hanson would come up with the biggest highlight of the day when she finished off the six straight Cobber goals at 2:39 of the third. Hanson's first goal of the year was memorable as she picked up the puck at her own net, raced the length of the ice, beat three Superior defenders and buried the puck in the top left corner of the goal.

The Yellowjackets would post a pair of goals midway through the third before Lila Lanctot tacked on the extra point for Concordia with 42 seconds left in the third. Friese capped her afternoon by getting the assist on the seventh CC goal.

Friese's 3-point game gives her six for the season and four for the weekend.

Despite the decided edge on the scoreboard, Concordia trailed in the shot department. Superior held a 27-22 advantage in shots on goal for the game.

Sophomore goalie Hailee Bailey turned aside 24 shots to record her second win of the weekend. She also lowered her goals against average to 3.03 and upped her save percentage to 87.8% on the year.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will head to Europe for a 2-week training trip over the holidays. CC will play in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia.
