Flaig Day

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/04/23)---It was Kiana Flaig's world on Saturday, and Concordia and Augsburg were just living in it.

The senior goalie stopped breakaways, point-blank shots, tip-ins and uncontested shots from in close. It didn't matter where the Auggies shot, Flaig had the answer.

In the end, Flaig turned aside all 41 shots she faced in the Cobbers' 2-0 win over second-place Augsburg. The victory gives Concordia a split in the 2-game series.

The 41 saves mark the second straight game of the weekend that Flaig stopped 41 shots. It is also the third time this year she has reached that save total. Flaig now has 1,635 career saves which is second on the school's all-time save list.

The game's turning point could have come midway through the second period when Concordia killed off a 5-on-3 power play. CC used that momentum to gain offensive zone time.

The game-winning goal came at the 10:23 mark of the final period. Sophomore Lexi Woodward was able to control the puck in front of the Augsburg off after a pass from freshman Emma Fetch. Woodward settled the puck on her backhand so she could make the shot with her forehand. The nifty shift at the top of crease allowed Woodward space to put the puck past the Auggie goalie.

The game winners was Woodward's third goal of the year – and first game-winning strike of the season.

Fetch would factor in the final goal of the game. Augsburg pulled their goalie for the second time with just under 1-minute t play, and the Auggies controlled the puck in the CC end. Fetch was able to knock the puck off one of the Auggies' sticks, and in the process went to clear the puck out of the zone. Not only did the puck clear the zone, it also slid 180 feet into the open net.

The empty-net, insurance goal 19:51 was Fetch's first collegiate score.

Augsburg held a 41-18 advantage in shots on goal.

Neither team scored on the power play in the game – or the series. Concordia was 0-for-3 on Saturday, while the Auggies went 0-for-4.

UP NEXT: Concordia will face another tough test when they hit the road for the last time in 2023. The Cobbers will play at No.2-ranked Gustavus on Feb. 10-11 in St. Peter.
