Schaack's Super Snipe Stymies Augsburg

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/24/15)—A super snipe from sophomore Amber Schaack proved to be the difference in Concordia's 2-1 win over Augsburg. Schaack scored with just under eight minutes to play in regulation to give the Cobbers three points in the two-game series.

It is the second straight weekend that Concordia has earned a tie and a win in a conference series. The Cobbers are now unbeaten in their last four games and get to the .500 mark in league play. CC is now 4-4-2 against MIAC foes and 5-10-2 in all games. Concordia has now posted at least a four-game unbeaten streak in eight straight seasons.

The second game of the series against the Auggies started out in almost the same fashion as the opener on Friday. Concordia gave up the first goal of the game and trailed 1-0 heading into the second period. That's where the similarities stopped as senior captain Maddy Gendreau made sure the Cobbers wouldn't have to wait until the final five minutes of play to get on the scoreboard.

Gendreau, the team's leading scorer, picked up the puck on her own blue line and then sped up the left wing. She was able to use her speed to get past the Augsburg defense deep in the Auggie zone. She then made a hard cut to the net to get a sharp angle shot on goal. Her shot was somehow able to get past the goalie and tied the game at 1-1. Gendreau's fourth goal of the season came at the 2:30 mark and kick started the CC offensive energy.

Concordia was outshot in the first period but then returned the favor in the second and third frames. The Cobbers put up consistent pressure on the Augsburg goal but weren't able to come up with the game winner until late in the third.

Both teams killed off a single penalty in the second period and then Augsburg held Concordia scoreless on the only power play chance of the third period. Both teams made runs into the other team's offensive zone before Concordia came away with the game winner.

Concordia vs. Augsburg Highlights - Jan. 24, 2015

Sophomore Jessica Kongelf started the play that led to CC's second goal. She was able to step up and keep the puck inside the Auggie blue line where it fell on to Schaack's stick. Schaack cut to the middle of the surface between the faceoff circles. A Cobber attacker skated in front of the goal to set up a screen and then Schaack sent a laser into the upper right corner to record the game winner.

Schaack's goal at 12:18 was her team-leading sixth of the season. She npw has three goals in the last six games. Kongelf was awarded her fourth assist of the year.

Concordia was able to survive a couple of good Augsburg chances late in the game. Cobber goalie Andrea Klug came up with a pair of big saves in the final three minutes of play to preserve the win.

The Cobbers outshot the Auggies 25-24 in the game. Gendreau once again led the team. She had a game-high six shots on goal and has led the team in shots in four of the past five games. Gendreau now has 59 shots on goal for the season.

Klug stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced to earn her third win of the season. She also lowered her overall season goals against average to 2.07.

Concordia will put their four-game unbeaten streak on the line when they play at Hamline on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31.
