Season High Goal & Shot Totals = First Win Of 2015

MEQUON, Wis. (1/02/15)—Concordia received goals from four different players and sophomore goalie Andrea Klug stopped all 24 shots she faced as the Cobbers beat Concordia University (Wis.) 4-0 in the first game of the 2015 calendar year.

The Cobbers put up season high totals in shots and goals in earning their third win of the season. CC is now 3-7 on the year. The victory is the sixth straight over Concordia University. The Falcons see their overall record fall to the .500 mark at 5-5-1.

Concordia had at least 10 shots in all three periods. The Cobbers finished with 32 shots on goal which is two more than their previous season high of 30 against nationally-ranked Gustavus. CC had 12 shots in the first period and then 10 in each of the second and third frames.

Concordia wasn't able to get on the scoreboard until the early part of the second period. Junior defenseman Cassey Petrich scored her first goal of the season in the second minute of the middle period. The eventual game-winning goal was assisted by Kelsey Vandegrift. It would be the first of two helpers in the game for Vandegrift.

Klug and the rest of the Cobber defense would make that one-goal lead hold up until the first eight minutes of the third frame. Concordia didn't allow a ton of chances from in close and Klug was able to turn aside seven shots in each of the first and second periods.

Concordia would put the game out of reach with two goals in a span of 1:05 in the last stanza. Bekah Wright broke around the right side of the Falcon defense to earn her team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 8:22 mark and then Jess Nelson poked home her third goal of the year at 9:25. Vandegrift was credited with the assist on Wright's tally and Kaya Baker recorded the only assist on Nelson's score.

Senior captain Libby Fransdal would finish off the scoring in the final three minutes of the third period. Fransdal lifted a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that eluded all the players in front of the goal and nestled into the top half of the net. The unassisted goal was Fransdal's first nugget of the season.

Ellen Rethwisch led all players with five shots on goal for the Cobbers. A trio of players had four shots in the game for CC and sophomore Bri Flynn returned to the lineup for the first time this season and put up three shots on goal.

Klug's shutout was the first of the season and fifth of her career. She also lowered her team-leading season goals against average to 2.30.

The two teams will finish off their series on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. in Mequon.
