Third-Period Blues Part II

ST. PETER, Minn. (11/15/14)—For the second straight game Concordia went into the third period deadlocked with No.7-ranked Gustavus. And for the second straight the Cobbers were able to close the game out and came away empty handed.

Concordia once again gave up two goals in the final period of play to the nationally-ranked Gusties and lost by two. The Cobbers fell 2-0 on Saturday after losing 3-1 on Friday night.

The Cobbers remain winless on the season but have played all four games against teams who are ranked in the top 10 of the nation. Gustavus stays perfect on the year and moves to 3-0-0 overall.

The teams skated through 40 minutes of scoreless play. Neither team was able to get the puck past the two outstanding goalies on the day. Cobber netminder Andrea Klug made 32 saves through the first 40 minutes of play while Gustie goalie Lindsey Hibbard 15 shots but came up big on a pair of occasions which could have swung the game in Concordia's favor.

Gustavus finally broke onto the scoreboard in the third minute of play in the final period. The Gusties scored the first of their two even-strength goals in the frame. The goal at 2:49 turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal.

Gustavus added an insurance goal midway through the final 20 minutes of play and Concordia would never be able to score after that.

Concordia was outshot 44-18 for the game. Jess Nelson had a team-high four shots for the Cobbers while Jessie Kongelf, Kaya Baker and Emily Goff had three shots each.

Klug finished with 42 saves on the afternoon while Hibbard stopped 18 shots to earn the shutout.

Neither team was able to score on the power play in the game. Concordia failed to score on their only man-advantage situation and Gustavus went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Concordia will now host their home opener when they square off against Bethel, their third nationally-ranked opponent, on Friday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 22. The Royals are currently ranked 10th in the latest USCHO.com poll.
