Bunches Of Goals Keep Coming In 5-0 Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/01/14)—There is an old hockey cliché that states, "goals come in bunches". If that's the case then Concordia is standing under a huge banana tree.

The Cobbers got two goals each from Madison Gendreau and Bri Flynn en route to a 5-0 win over Hamline which completed the weekend sweep. Concordia scored 11 goals against the Pipers on the weekend which are more than the team scored in the first 12 games of the season. Concordia has now won six straight games and is averaging 3.8 goals per game during that stretch.

The victory also helps Concordia reach the .500 mark for the first time all season. CC is now 8-8-3 in all games and 7-4-1 in the MIAC. The Cobbers are tied for fourth place in the conference standings.

Less than 24 hours after scoring three goals in the third period to beat Hamline 6-3, Concordia took all the drama out of the series finale by netting three scores in  a span of 3:54 midway through the first frame.

Gendreau and Flynn jump started the offensive attack when they scored the first two goals in a span of two minutes. Gendreau opened the scoring with a goal at 9:01 and then Flynn added the second on a wraparound at 11:01. Abby Taffe and Bekah Wright got the assists on the opener and Jess Nelson was credited with the helper on Flynn's first of two. Jessie Kongelf finished off the trio of goals when she scored her first collegiate nugget at 12:55. Anna Westmark had the assist on the play.

The second and third periods were broken up by a constant stream to the penalty box. The two teams combined for 10 penalties over the final 40 minutes of play with the Pipers being whistled for seven infractions.

Despite going 0-for-6 on the power play in the final two periods, Concordia was able to score twice more. The Cobbers scoring tandem of Flynn and Gendreau added the fourth and fifth goals in the final seven minutes of the third period. Flynn scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year at 13:20 and then Gendreau earned her sixth goal of the year at 15:49. Gendreau was credited with one of the two assists on Flynn's goal and the two are tied for the team lead in points with 10. Cassey Petrich also got an assist on the fourth goal while Libby Fransdal earned her team-leading eighth assist of the season on the final score. She is now sixth in the MIAC in assists in conference games.

Andrea Klug got her second straight start in goal for Concordia. She made 14 saves to get her second shutout of the season. The Cobbers now have five total shutouts for 2013-14 which is the most for any team in the MIAC.

Concordia outshot Hamline 36-14 in the game. CC has now had at least 30 shots in five of its last six games. The Cobbers only had three 30-plus shot games in the first 13 contests of the season.

The Cobbers will put their six-game win streak on the line when they host St. Olaf in a two-game series on Feb. 7-8.
