Denny + Dreschel = First Season Win

Denny + Dreschel = First Season Win

BLAINE, Minn. (11/22/13)—Concordia sophomore goalie Madison Denny stopped all 32 shots she faced, the Cobbers got just enough offense and beat Bethel 1-0 to pick up their first win of the season.

Not only is the victory the first of the year for Concordia but it is also the first coaching win for Cobber first-year head coach Sarah Erickson. CC is now 1-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in league play. The Royals, who are the 13th highest rated team in the latest USCHO.com national poll, lose for the first time in three games and fall to 3-2-0 in all games and 2-1-0 in the MIAC.

The game was a back-and forth affair with only two shots separating the teams at the end of the 60 minutes of play. Bethel held a 32-30 advantage in shots in the game as they were shutout for the first time in 23 games against a conference opponent. The Royals had scored at least three goals in every game this season and were averaging 4.5 goals per game before Friday night.

The game-winning goal, and only goal of the game, came at 15:47 of the first period. Freshman Kristin Dreschel picked the perfect moment to score her first collegiate goal. Dreschel scored the game winner on an assist from fellow freshman Bri Flynn. It was only Concordia's third goal of the season.

Denny would make sure Dreschel's goal would stand up as she stopped 24 shots in the final two periods of play. Denny also made several key saves on odd-man, and breakaway, situations throughout the game.

Concordia had a chance to add an insurance goal late in the third period but they were unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 situation in the final eight minutes of play. The one thing the two-man advantage did provide was a chance to cut off any chances that Bethel would have to come up with the game-tying goal.

Both teams were held scoreless on the power play. The Cobbers couldn't score in their two man-advantage situations and Bethel was 0-for-3 on the power play.

The two teams will finish off the conference series on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn.
