Gendreau And Stifling Defense = Series Sweep

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (1/19/13)—Madison Gendreau scored a pair of goals, the Cobber defense suffocated the St. Ben's offense for the second straight game and Concordia went on to record a 3-1 win over the Blazers on Saturday. The victory earns CC a sweep in the two-game series and pushes the Cobbers all the way into second place in the MIAC standings.

The Concordia defense allowed less than 20 shots for the second consecutive game against St. Ben's and only allowed one goal the entire 120 minutes for the weekend as they evened their overall record at 5-5-3. The Cobbers are now 4-2-1 in league play and all alone in second place in the league standings. The Blazers are now 4-5-3 and 2-5-1 in the MIAC.

Gendreau got the first of her two goals in the game at the 7:30 mark of the first period to give CC an early 1-0 lead. Abby Taffe and Libby Fransdal were credited with the assists.

The game would stay at 1-0 until the third period when Anna Westmark staked Concordia to a 2-0 lead with a goal on the power play at 7:50. Westmark's third goal of the year was the Cobbers' first power play goal in 10 chances in a streak that went back four games. Breann Julius and Macy Leland picked up the helpers on Westmark's tally. For Julius it was her team-leading 12th point of the year.

St. Ben's (4-5-3/2-5-1 MIAC) scored their first goal of the weekend at 10:13 of the third period breaking a 110-minute scoreless streak in the series.

The Cobbers then finished off the win when Gendreau scored her second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, at 19:08. The Blazers pulled their goalie at 18:38 and then Gendreau iced the game with the final goal of the game.

Concordia outshot St. Ben's 35-19 for the game and 71-37 for the series. Cobber freshman goalie Madison Denny turned aside 36 of the 37 shots she faced for the two games. CSB goalie Jenna Traut stopped 32 shots and was saddled for the loss.

The Cobbers will stay on the road next weekend when they play at Gustavus in a showdown between the top two teams in the MIAC. Concordia and the Gusties will play in St. Peter Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.
