How Sweep It Is

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (12/03/11)—Concordia scored three goals in the final five minutes of the second period to blow open a 0-0 tie with St. Thomas en route to a 4-1 win in Mendota Heights on Saturday. The win completes the two-game sweep for the Cobbers marking the first time in school history that CC has swept the Tommies.

Sophomore Breann Julius was the offensive star of the game for Concordia. Julius had a hand in all four goals as she recorded a hat trick and assisted on the other Cobber tally. Julius scored the first and third goals while linemate Katelyn Dold poached the third goal in the three-goal flurry. Dold also had an assist on the day.

The Cobbers have now won four straight games and have outscored their opponents 15-6 during that stretch. CC ups their overall record to 6-1-1 and their MIAC mark to 4-1-1. The Cobbers are currently in second place in the league standings.  St. Thomas has now lost four straight games and falls to 1-4-2 in all games and 1-4-1 in MIAC play.

Neither team was able to score for the first 34:00 of the game. Concordia slowly started to take control of the contest in the second period and were finally rewarded for their play at the 15:42 mark when Julius scored her fifth goal of the season. Dold then gave CC a 2-0 lead when she finished off Julius's pass from just on top of the crease. It was also Dold's fifth goal of the year. The back-breaking goal came with just :02 left in the second period. The puck was dumped into the Tommie end and CC hustled to make a play on the puck while UST thought time was going to expire. The puck popped in front of the net and Julius was in the right place and gave the Cobbers a commanding 3-0 lead.

The final goal of the game came in the final minute of the third period. After the Tommies pulled their goalie, Dold tracked down a clearing pass that went all the way into the St. Thomas end. She then made a centering pass from behind the goal right on to the tape of Julius' stick and Julius easily slide the puck into the open net. Julius now has a team-leading seven goals on the year. Dold leads the team in scoring with 12 overall points.

Concordia wound up outshooting the Tommies 30-23. CC netminder Tamara Twite stopped 22 shots to earn her fifth win of the year.

The Cobbers will have one non-conference game before the Christmas break. CC will play St. Kate's in Buffalo, Minn. on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
