Steadily Improving Cobbers Ready For MIAC Meet

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/04/13)—The good news for Concordia entering the MIAC Championship Meet this weekend is they return four of the five golfers who participated in last year's conference meet. The even better news is that they also return four athletes from the 2011 team that finished fourth at the meet.

MIAC Preview Of The Women's Golf Championship Meet

The 2013 regular season saw the Cobbers steadily improve from one meet to another. After shooting the best score of the year in the very first two rounds of the season at the Cobber Invite, CC bettered their team score in each of their final four rounds of the regular season. Concordia's 327 in the Cobber Open and Concordia Invite gave way to scores in the 340's the rest of the year. That gradually dropped until CC fired a 337 in the final round of the Blazer Invite – their last competitive round of the season.

Concordia enters the MIAC Meet with a team average of 340.2 which is sixth best in the league. The Cobbers are only 2.8 shots out of the top 5.

The Cobbers' Kristi Opatz leads the team with a scoring average of 83.7 and Amy Mireault isn't far behind at 84.4. Opatz has three top 20 finishes on the year including a second-place finish at the UM-Morris Invite. Opatz is one of three CC players to shoot in the 70's this year. Mireault has been at her best in the big tournaments this season. Her lowest score of the year, an 80, was the team's best round at the Blazer Invite.

Katie Nelson is another player to watch on the rise for Concordia. She won the one-day UM-Morris Invite with a score of 84 and owns the team's best single round score of the year when she fired a 77 in the first round of the Cobber Open.

Kara and Dana Meslow and Hayley Johnson look to round out the top 5 for the Cobbers at the conference meet. All three players have stroke averages under 90 and all three factored in for the team at the last meet of the regular season.
