Young Cobbers Dominate UM-Morris Invite

MORRIS, Minn. (9/22/11)—The youthful Cobbers continued to improve on Wednesday at the UM-Morris Invite as they shot a team score of 343 and won the tournament by 50 shots. Freshmen Holly Karkela and Kristi Opatz tied for the low score with an 83. Opatz earned medalist honors at the invite on the basis of a scorecard playoff.

The all first-year Cobbers posted four of the top five individual scores at the tournament. For Karkela it tied for her best round of the season and the 83 for Opatz was the third time this season that she has fired a round under 85.

Joining Karkela and Opatz in the top 5 were Molly Zavadil and Katie Nelson. Zavadil shot an 87 and Nelson countered with a 90.

Fellow freshmen Amy Mireault and Dana Meslow finished in the top 10 at the tournament. Mireault had a 93 and Meslow was one shot behind with a 94.

Concordia will travel south to Marshall, Minn. to compete in the Southwest Minnesota State Invite on Saturday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Marshall Golf Club.
