Same Story, Different Year

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/8/23)----Concordia wasted little time picking up where they left last season when they advanced to the MIAC tournament championship game. The Cobbers scored at least 20 points in all four quarters and beat Minn.-Morris 93-70 in the season opener.

The 93 points is the most scored by a Concordia team since they put up 95 on St. Olaf in the second game of last season.

Not only did head coach Kim Wagers get the result she wanted, she was able to play 15 players, with 11 getting on the scoresheet.

The Cobbers were led by junior Carlee Sieben, who went 6-for-12 from outside the arc and finished with a game-high 22 points. It's the second year in a row that Sieben has torched the Cougars in the season opener. Last season, she had 27 points against Morris in an 85-60 win.

Sieben was one of four Cobber starters with a double-digit point total. Fellow junior Makayla Anderson was 6-for-10 from the floor, 7-for-8 from the free throw line and finished with 19 points. She also hauled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Senior Emily Beseman was 3-for-6 from distance and had 12 points, while junior Greta Tollefson added 10 points and came away with four rebounds.

The Cobbers also have a pair of newcomers with at least eight points in the game. Genevieve Gruba was 6-for-6 from the free throw line and had 1- points in her first college game. She also grabbed four boards. Maci Wheeldon played 11 minutes and finished with eight points on a 4-for-8 shooting night.

Morris actually outshot Concordia from the floor. The Cougars shot 49.0% (24-for-49) from the field as compared to 41.9% (31-for-74) for CC. The big difference came in the number of possessions the Cobbers had in comparison to Morris and the shooting from outside the arc. Concordia attempted 25 more shots in the game and went 11-for-28 from distance. Morris made only two shots from outside the arc and went 2-for-9.

The Cobbers also held a 36-29 advantage in rebounds and forced 19 turnovers while only committing seven miscues on the offensive end.

UP NEXT: Concordia will hit the road for the first time in 2023-24 when they travel to Stevens Point, Wis. for the Wis.-Stevens Point Tip-Off Tournament, where they will play Wis.-Whitewater and host Wis.-Stevens Point.
