Fourth Quarter Is Unkind In First Home Game Of 2023

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/07/23)—The fourth quarter was unkind to Concordia in its first home game of 2023. The Cobber led St. Catherine 40-39 heading into the final 10-minutes of play, but then shot 15.4% from the floor and didn't make a 3-point field goal in the fourth period and lost 57-44.

The loss snaps a 4-game win streak for Concordia who are now 8-3 in all games and 5-3 in the MIAC. The Cobbers scored only four points in the decisive fourth quarter which is a season low for any quarter this season.

St. Catherine wins for the third time in the last four games and is now 7-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

The game was a close affair from the back half of the first half until the first 5-minutes of the fourth period. During that time the game featured 10 lead changes and five tie scores.

The Wildcats led for almost the entire first half. They broke out to a 13-3 lead, before the Cobbers were able to cut the lead to four points on a Jordyn Kahler 3-ball in the final minute of the opening quarter.

Concordia took its first lead of the game with 1:30 left to play in the first half when sophomore Carlee Sieben hit a shot from distance. St. Catherine followed with a layup and held a 24-23 lead at the break.

The Cobbers turned the tables in the third quarter and led for almost 8-minutes of the period. CC led 40-37 when Makayla Anderson got open inside and put down a layup with 2:06 to play in the quarter. The Wildcats scored the final two points in the period which gave Concordia a 40-39 lead entering the final quarter.

Anderson and Symone Beld made the only two field goals of the fourth quarter. Concordia opened the quarter by going 1-for-7 from the floor and 0-for-4 from outside the arc.

Concordia finished the game by shooting 33.3% (19-for-57) from the floor and only 16.7% (4-for-24) from 3-point distance. It is the second lowest 3-point percentage and 3-pointers made in the season for CC.

Anderson was the only Cobber player with more than six points in the game. She scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Kahler matched Anderson's rebound total of seven and added three points.
