Fourth Quarter Frostbite Continues

MOORHEAD, Minn. (02/09/22)---It was another case of fourth-quarter frostbite for the Cobbers. Concordia trailed Gustavus 45-44 heading into the final period, but then went 2-for-12 from the field, 0-for-8 from outside the arc, were outscored 20-7 and lost 65-51.

Concordia led by as many as nine points in the first half, before the Gusties pushed back to take a 33-29 lead at the halftime break. The Cobbers rallied in the third quarter and scored the last four points of the period to cut the lead to a single point before the cold winter wind blew through Memorial Auditorium.

Concordia has now been outscored in the fourth quarter in the last three games - and by a combined total of 62-31.

The loss is the fourth straight for Concordia who falls to 7-12 overall and 7-10 in the MIAC. CC is in seventh place in the league standings, and if the playoff started tomorrow they would host St. Olaf or St. Mary's in the first round of the playoffs in the 7/10 game on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Gustavus wins for the third straight game and is now 16-4 overall, 14-3 in the MIAC and in second place in the league standings.

The Cobbers controlled the first quarter, jumping to a nine-point lead after scoring 15 of the first 21 points in the game. Gustavus responded by scoring the six points in the quarter to bring the lead down to two points at 17-15.

The teams would then go back-and-forth in the second quarter with five different lead changes.

Concordia finished the game by shooting 34.5% (19-for-55) from the floor and 16.7% (4-for-24) from distance. CC was 9-for-10 from the line. Gustavus connected on 46.2% (24-foe-52) of their shots from the field and 31.3% (5-for-16) of their attempts from beyond the arc. GAC was 12-for-17 from the foul stripe.

The Cobbers were led by the Sem sisters. Jennie Sem had a game-high 15 points and three rebounds, while older sister Mary Sem added 13 points and four boards.

Freshman Makayla Anderson led Concordia in rebounding for the fourth straight game. She pulled down 10 rebounds and scored four points. She leads the team in rebounding with a 6.0 rpg average.
