A Senior Moment Silences The Pipers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/24/15)—A senior moment carried Concordia past Hamline on Saturday. Cobber seniors Alley Fisher and Erin Januschka combined for 38 points to help lead Concordia past the Pipers 72-64.

Fisher went 9-for-10 from the free throw and finished with a team-high points while Januschka was 7-for-9 from the floor and added 17 points as Concordia picked up its second straight home win.

The victory give the Cobbers 10 wins for the year marking the 41st consecutive season that Concordia has posted a double-digit overall win total. CC is now 10-7 overall and 6-4 in the MIAC. The Cobbers are currently in fifth place in the conference standings only one game out of second place. Hamline falls for the third straight game and is now 9-8 in all games and 4-6 in league play.

Fisher and Januschka led a Concordia offense that shot 45.1% (23-for-51) form the field and 46.7% (7-for-15) from outside the arc for the game. It is the first time in four games that CC has shot over 37.0% from 3-point range. On the other end of the floor the Cobber defense was holding the Piper offense to 38.7% (24-for-62) shooting from the field and 33.3% (7-for-21) from outside the arc.

The keys in the game came from the free throw line and around the basket. The Cobbers shot 15 more free throws than Hamline, connected on eight more shots from the foul line and held a 45-27 advantage in rebounding. The plus-18 margin on the boards is a season high and most since they outrebounded the Pipers by 22 at the end of last season. Concordia has now outrebounded their opponents by 29 in the last two games.

During the game it was a 15-2 run by Concordia after Hamline had taken a 49-46 lead with 10:56 to play that sealed the win. Junior Olivia Johnson had eight of the team's 15 points in that decisive stretch as she made a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed two rebounds. 

Johnson had 12 points to finish off the Cobbers' trio of double-digit starting players. She also collected a game-high 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.       

Hannah Jeske came away with eight points and five rebounds for Concordia. She was 2-for-4 from outside the arc and 2-for-4 from the free throw line.

Fisher's 21 points pushes her season average to 15.9 points per game. She is now third in the MIAC in scoring. Fisher also had a pair of 3-point field goals in the game and now has 157 for her career which is 18 away from breaking the school record for 3-pointers in a career.

Januschka has been on a shooting tear in the last two games. She shot 88.2% (15-for-17) from the floor in the past two contests. She was also 8-for-9 from the free throw line – missing only three of 27 shots.

Concordia will play the third game, of their four-game home stand, on Wednesday, Jan. 28 when they host St. Benedict at 5:45 p.m.
