A Record-Setting Win In The Home Opener

A Record-Setting Win In The Home Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/18/14)—What a difference72 hours can make. In the season-opening loss at Jamestown on Saturday, the Cobbers scored only 47 points, recorded a mere four assists and made four 3-point field goals. On Tuesday, Concordia scored 54 points in the second half alone, dished out 29 assists and made a school-record 13 shots behind the arc in a 97-78 win against Mayville State in the home opener.

Concordia was able to push the ball up the court and get transition baskets throughout the game. CC was also able to take advantage of the Comets' zone defense and routinely connect on shots from the outside. The Cobbers went 13-for-25 (52.0%) from 3-point range which breaks the old school record of 12 set most recently against St.  Catherine towards the end of last season.

Concordia's offensive outburst was more than double in their first game of the season against the Jimmies. The Cobbers scored 43 points in the first half, just four shy of their total in the season opener, and did that 11 points better by putting up 54 in the second half. The 97 total points is the most since Jan. 17, 2009 when CC scored 101 against St. Catherine.

The 29 assists in the game for Concordia is the most by a Cobber team in a single game since Feb. 7, 1996 when they had 31 against Augsburg.

Sophomore guard Greta Walsh ignited the Cobbers' scoring spree by hitting on the first shot of the game. Walsh's 3-pointer at the 19:29 mark gave Concordia the lead for good as the Cobbers led from wire-to-wire.

The 3-pointer by Walsh also established a theme for Concordia on the night as they were able to make the extra pass to get the ball to the open player who then was able to knock down the open jumper.

Senior guard Alley Fisher picked up the assist on the first basket of the game and went on to dish out a career-high 12 assists in the game. Fisher would also be within two points of a career high on the scoreboard. She went 6-for-8 from outside the arc and finished with 24 points. Fisher also had four steals in the game.
