A Brand New Standard Of Scoring

A Brand New Standard Of Scoring

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/11/13)—Concordia junior guard Alley Fisher was skeptical about the new basketball standards before the game. That skepticism turned into enthusiasm after Fisher scored a career-high 26 points and helped lead the Cobbers to a 79-59 win over Augsburg.

"I think I really like them," commented Fisher after the game about the new baskets. "We got them two days before so we had two practices with them. But in the end you just gotta play. It's just a basket."

Fisher's "gotta play" attitude helped Concordia win for the fourth time in the last five games. The Cobbers are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Auggies remain winless in league play and move to 2-3 in all games and 0-3 in the MIAC.

Concordia was able to seize control midway through the second half when they went on a 17-2 run to turn a 46-45 lead into a comfortable 16-point margin at 63-47 with 7:03 left in the final period of play. The Cobbers had led for the entire first half but the Auggies rallied to take their first lead of the game at the start of the second frame by scoring the final three points of the opening period and then the first five points of the second half.

The teams would then trade leads and tie games until the Cobbers went on the decisive run midway through the period.

Said Fisher about the run, "we got it into our mind that we needed to step up our game and that's what we did."

Fisher finished the game by going 4-for-8 from outside the arc and 9-for-14 from the field. Her 26 points betters her previous career high of 21 which she posted in her freshman season.

Fisher was one of three players to score in double figures for the game. Senior center Alexandra Lippert recorded her first double-double of the season. She scored 17 points and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds. She was 6-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Lippert also swatted four shots to bring her conference-leading total to 22 on the season. Freshman point guard Greta Walsh had 11 points and also added five steals and three assists.

Concordia shot 54.7% (29-for-53) from the floor for the game which is a season high. CC also connected on 33.3% (6-for-18) of their 3-point attempts to mark the fifth straight game that the Cobbers have shot 30.0% or better from long range. The 79 points scored is the most given up the Auggies this season.

The Cobbers' pressure defense once again forced 20-plus turnovers. Augsburg committed 21 miscues in the game. CC's quick perimeter game also held the Auggies' outside game in check. The Auggies shot just 18.2% from outside the arc.

Concordia will finish off the 2013 calendar year when they host Hamline on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.
