RUNning Away To A Victory

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/18/12)-- Tricia Sorensen scored a game-high 20 points to lead Concordia to a 64-52 win over Macalester on Wednesday. The victory snaps a two-game losing streak for the Cobbers. Concordia trailed 28-27 with 16:00 left in the second half but then went on a 23-9 run to put the game away.

The win keeps the Cobbers bunched with the top six in the MIAC. CC is now 9-6 overall and 7-5 in conference play and all alone in sixth place in the league standings. Concordia is only one game behind the three-way tie for third place. Macalester loses for the second time in the past four games and falls to 6-9 overall and 4-8 in the MIAC.

The game was highlighted by significant runs from each team. Concordia got out to a 25-13 lead, after posting a 6-0 streak, before the Scots rallied and went on a 15-0 run that put them ahead at 28-25 lead just after halftime. The Cobbers then scored 26 of the next 35 points and seized control of the game with a 51-37 lead with 9:38 to play in the second period.       

Concordia finished the game by shooting 48.2% (27-for-56) from the floor and 50.0% (3-for-6) from 3-point range. It is only the second time all season that CC has shot above 47.0% from the floor. The Cobbers are now 4-1 on the year when they shoot better than 40.0% from the field.

The other big advantage in the game came from around the basket where Concordia held a 38-32 edge in rebounding and a 20-8 advantage in points in the paint.

Sorensen's 20 points were two shy of her career high. She was 9-for-15 from the floor. Sorensen also came away with a game-high nine rebounds. Cobber center Alex Lippert finished with 12 points and three blocks and Emily Thesing had 10 points and four assists.

Holly Schiedermayer and Jessica Rene both had 14 points to pace the Scots. Schiedermayer also had nine rebounds, six assists and one block.

Concordia's next game will be at longtime conference rival St. Ben's on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m.
