Folkestad & Johnsrud Key Cobbers On Day 2 At MIAC Meet

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/24/24)---Senior Cooper Folkestad and junior Peyton Johnsrud led the way for Concordia on Day 2 at the MIAC Indoor Championship.

The two field athletes both posted event wins to help the Cobbers finish sixth in the final team standings. Concordia finished with 53.0 points.

The 6th-place finish marks the fourth straight season that CC has finished in the Top 6 of the conference at the MIAC Indoor Meet.

Folkestad finished off his indoor redemption tour by claiming the top spot in the shot put. An All-American in 2021, Folkestad was No.2 on the conference shot put list for almost the entire season. He stepped when it mattered most to claim the second indoor shot put title of his career. Folkestad won the event on his third attempt when he let go with a throw of 52-05.25. That mark was under his season-best distance of 54-10.25, but still good enough to win the MIAC crown by over a foot.

Johnsrud captured the championship medal in the high jump. Johnsrud, a late addition to the team this indoor season, came up with a career-best height of 6-05 on his second attempt at that height.

Johnsrud and an athlete from St. John's tied for the top height, but Johnsrud claimed the title by fewer misses at lower heights. Johnsrud didn't miss until he got to 6-04 and then only missed once. The SJU competitor had two failed attempts before he cleared 6-05 on his second attempt as well.

The top track finish on Saturday was turned in by Dawson Schaffer, who crossed the line in 22.96 in the 200 meters and placed sixth in the event. Schaffer became only the sixth Cobber in program history to post a time under 23 seconds in the event.

The shot put turned into the top-scoring event for the Cobbers on Day 2 as three athletes all recorded podium finishes. Besides the win from Folkestad, junior Dominik Hillstrom was seventh with a distance of 47-10.75 and freshman Sam Dioszeghy was eighth at 46-02.50. Both marks were season bests for the two athletes.

Concordia had mixed results in the two relay events. The 4x200-meter relay team was disqualified for a lane infraction, while the 4x400 quartet of Trevor Tiongson, Gavin Groshelle, Zander Gallmeier and Schaffer came home in a season-best time of 3:28.69.

UP NEXT: Concordia will take a select group of athletes to the NCAA Last Chance Qualifier hosted by Wartburg on Mar. 1-2.
