Track Athletes Lead Cobbers On Day 1 At MIAC Meet

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/23/24)---Concordia had six track athletes post podium finishes to lead the Cobbers on Day 1 at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet.

Led by MIAC heptathlon champion Wade Rhonemus, Concordia finished Friday with 26 team points. That total was good for sixth in the team standings.  

Rhonemus posted a school-record total of 4,967 points in winning the indoor multi-event title. His total will qualify him for the NCAA National Indoor Meet.

Rhonemus was the only event winner for CC on Day 1. After competing in the heptathlon. Rhonemus turned around and finished ninth in the pole vault with a height of 13-09.25.

Junior Trevor Tiongson recorded the highest track finish for the Cobbers when he crossed the line in a time of 50.69 in the 400 meters and placed fifth in the event.

The sprint pair of Dawson Schaffer and Logan Clark both claimed 6th-place finishes in the shortest event of the championship meet. Schaffer ran a 7.12 in the finals of the 60-meter dash to claim three team points. Clark qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.70 and then ran an 8.65 in the finals to place sixth.

Junior Gavin Groshelle and first-year runner Brady Goss had the other Top 8 finishes for CC. Groshelle, who was seeded 16th heading into the meet, ran a career-best time of 1:57.09 in the 800 meters and finished in sixth place.         

Goss recorded his team points in the mile. He was seeded 10th coming into the MIAC meet and proceeded to clock a time of 4:20.30 and finished in eighth place.

Besides, the 9th-place finish for Rhonemus in the pole vault, the other top field mark came from Anthony Marsh, who was ninth in the long jump with a distance of 20-05.75.

The other team points for the Cobbers were recorded by the distance medley relay crew of Tanner Olson, Zander Gallmeier, Brady Andrews and Tyler Goss. The quartet crossed the line in 10:46.23 and placed seventh.   

UP NEXT: Concordia will look to move up in the team standings when they complete the MIAC Championship Meet on Saturday, Feb. 24 at St. Olaf.
