Monster 400 Highlights Decathlon Day 1 For Rhonemus

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/04/23)---Concordia senior Wade Rhonemus closed out the first day of the MIAC decathlon by recording a career-best time in the 400-meters and is in third place in the overall competition with five events to go.

Rhonemus clocked a 50.93 in the 400 meters, which was over a full second faster than his previous career-best time. Rhonemus' monster finish on Day 1 of the conference decathlon was good for 772 points – his highest score of any event on Thursday.

Rhonemus finished Day 1 with 3,188 points which is 298 points behind the current leader. The good news for Rhonemus is that his best events of the decathlon are loaded on Day 2, so the deficit is easily within reach.

The 3,188 points are 167 more than he posted last year on the first day of the MIAC decathlon. It is also his highest Day 1 total of his previous conference decathlon competitions.

Rhonemus' other 700-plus-point event on Thursday came in the very first event when he crossed the line of the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.49. That mark earned him 755 points and was the third fastest of all the competitors in the decathlon.

Rhonemus backed up his quality start in the 100-meter dash by winning the long jump with a mark of 21-2.00. That distance is a career-best for Rhonemus and garnered him 686 points.

Rhonemus' lowest scoring event of the day came in the shot put, where he finished with a distance of 32-00.25, which was good for 471 points.

The penultimate event of Day 1 was the high jump. Rhonemus cleared the bar at 5-05 and came away with 504 points.

Rhonemus will finish the decathlon by competing in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. The last five events will start at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, May 5 at Carleton.
