Wright On Track At Final Day Of MIAC Meet

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/26/23)---A school record and an MIAC championship were a perfect way for senior Cal Wright to finish off his indoor career.

Wright was a part of the Cobber 4x200-meter relay team win that event, and he then broke the 9-year-old record in the 200 meters by a mere .01 of a second.

Wright's achievements helped Concordia finish sixth in the final team standings with a total of 56.5 points. It marks the fourth straight season that the Cobbers have finished in the Top 6 of the conference at the MIAC Indoor Meet.

Wright ran the second leg for the Cobber 4x2 relay team that started the events on Sunday. Nolan Morical, handed the baton to Wright, who then passed it on to Trevor Tiongson. Senior Hayden Gagnon brought the win home and crossed the line in a time of 1:29.31. That mark was .48 of a second in front of Bethel. It was also a season-best time for a CC squad in 2023.

Wright had a bit of a break before returning to the track in the 200 meters. Despite being bumped during one of the turns, and then getting plowed after the finish line, Wright clocked a 22.37. That time edged out the previous school record set in 2014 by Ben Vickstrom.

Gagnon came through with the only other Top 8 track finishes on Sunday for CC. He ran season-best times in the 400 and 600 meters and placed fifth in both events.

Wade Rhonemus, who finished in seventh place in the heptathlon, earned a sixth-place finish in the pole vault on Sunday. He was the only CC athlete to score team points in a field event on Day 3. Rhonemus cleared the bar at 13-08.25 which came on his very first attempt at that height.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a chance to try and post a national-qualifying mark when they compete at the Last Chance Qualifier Meet held at Wartburg College on Mar. 3-4.
