Record-Setting Saturday Secures Second Straight Second-Place Finish

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (02/26/22)---The record-setting avalanche continued for Concordia on Day 2 at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet.

A day after setting two school records, the Cobbers upped that total by erasing four different marks on Saturday. Those record-breaking performances helped Concordia earn its second straight runner-up team finish at the conference indoor meet.

The Cobbers finished the MIAC Meet with a total of 139 team points. That total is the highest ever for Concordia at the MIAC Indoor Meet. The previous best was 108.5 which came back in 2000 when CC also finished in second place.

Besides the five school records, Concordia won six different events on the final day of the meet.

Seniors Munir Isahak and Jesse Middendorf once again led the way for the Cobbers. The duo both broke school records on Friday, and they doubled that total by eclipsing two more marks.

Middendorf broke the school record in the 1000 meters, less than 24 hours after breaking his own mark in the 800 meters on Friday night. Middendorf won the conference 1K by posting a time of 2:28.73. That time broke the old record he set earlier in the year by .36 of a second.

Isahak also broke one of his own school marks when he won the 3000 meters in a time of 8:20.48. He won the race by 1.60 seconds and lowered his previous best time by 6.28 seconds. Isahak's time is also No.20 in DIII this season which puts him on the fence for earning a spot at the national indoor meet.

Concordia's dominance in the middle distance and distance events carried over to the 600 meters where freshman Tommy Kern broke Middendorf's school record by racing to a time of 1:20.31. He bested Middendorf by .10 of a second.

Kern's time in the 600 was also good for first place, which gave the Cobbers event wins in the 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 3K. Concordia also recorded runner-up finishes in the 200 and 5K.

The final two school records came in the two relay events on Saturday. The quartet of Cal Wright, Trevor Tiongson, Kern and Colin Schuller bolted to the event win in a time of 1:29.47, which not only broke the school record, but also bettered the facility record at Carleton.

Wright, Kern and Schuller then teamed up with Middendorf to win the 4x400-meter relay. The squad busted out a time of 3:19.86 which won the race by 2.54 seconds.

Wright also came through with a runner-up finish in the 200 meters when he sprinted to a season-best time of 22.48.

The other MIAC champion on Day 2 for the Cobbers was sophomore Cooper Folkestad who won the shot put with a distance of 50-05.25. That mark is just under his season-best distance which is currently No.8 in the nation this year.
