OWATONNA, Minn. (4/15/23)---Concordia returned to action after a 2-week break and lost 7-2 to St. Olaf in a match played at the West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center in Owatonna.

The Cobbers fell into a 3-0 hole after doubles play. St. Olaf (6-11, 3-5 MIAC) won all three doubles bouts on the day. One of the best matches of the afternoon came at No.1 doubles where the freshmen duo of Logan Sandberg and Kai Pierce were inched out 8-6.

Pierce would get his revenge in singles play as he outlasted his opponent at No.2 singles in the super-set tie-breaker. It took Pierce a full set to shake off the loss in doubles play. He fell 6-1 in the opener, but then rallied to claim a 6-4 victory in the second set. The super-set came down to the wire where Pierce battled his way to a 10-8 victory.

The singles win was Pierce's ninth of the season. He is ties with Sandberg for the team lead in singles wins in 2023. Both players are 9-4 on the year, and both first-year standouts are also 5-3 in MIAC play.

The other team point for Concordia came at No.6 singles where senior 2-sport athlete Nicholas Ness picked up his first singles win. Ness followed the storyline that Pierce used. He dropped the first set and then came back to win in the super-set. After losing 6-2 in set No.1, Ness posted a 6-3 win in the second set. He earned the overall win with a 10-7 score in the super-set.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off its season when they host No.17-ranked Gustavus on Saturday, Apr. 15 at 8:30 a.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo.
