Improvement Carries Over From Florida

ST. PETER, Minn. (3/07/14)—Concordia returned to MIAC action after their spring break trip to Florida and lost 9-0 at No.18-ranked Gustavus. The Cobbers showed improvement over last year against the national powerhouse Gusties as they won 15 more singles games than in 2013.

The most dramatic match of the day for Concordia came at No.1 singles where sophomore Zach Zitur took Matt Bettes all the way to a super-set tie-breaker. Zitur came out with resolve and captured the first set 6-4. He then lost the second set 6-0 before falling 10-3 in the tie-breaker.

Freshman Sam Smith also went deep into his match at No.3 singles. Smith lost 6-2 in the opening set and then went to a tie-breaker in the second set and lost 7-2, 7-6.

All four of the other singles players took multiple games off the nationally-ranked Gusties.  Sophomore Austin Storm was pressed into singles action after a bout with sickness left Even Jystad unable to participate in the dual. Storm responded by winning three games in the second set at No.5 singles.

Concordia will hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend. The Cobbers will play at St. Thomas on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 3 p.m. and then at St. Mary's on Sunday, Mar. 16 at 10:30 a.m.
