Own Goal In The 87th Minute Sends Cobbers To A Tie

COLLEGVILLE, Minn. (10/12/23)---An own goal in the 87th minute of play cost the Cobbers a chance for a win at St. John's. Concordia conceded the game-tying goal at 86:14 and had to settle for a 1-1 tie in Collegeville.

The tie is the second in the last four games for the Cobbers, who are now 4-6-2 overall and 1-4-2 in league play. The Johnnies are 5-3-4 in all games and 2-2-2 in the MIAC.

Concordia struck in the first 10 minutes of the game when junior Kai Black picked off an errant pass from the St. John's goalie and fired a shot from 25 yards out that caught the keeper out of the goal. The strike from Black at 6:43 was his second of the season.

The Cobbers held the 1-0 lead at the halftime break and then continued to neutralize the SJU offense with numbers. CC looked to be headed for the win until a cross from outside the penalty area on the left wing was accidentally slip-headed from a Cobber defender and went over the head over Concordia goalie Jensen Waltz and under the crossbar.

There was only a one-shot difference in shots on goal between the two teams. St. John's had eight shots on frame, compared to seven for CC.

Junior Leo Dunor led all players with six total shots, while freshman Owen Gallo had a team-high two shots on goal.

Waltz made five saves in the game and has 67 for the year, which is third-most in the MIAC.

UP NEXT: Concordia will return home to host the annual Homecoming game. The Cobbers will square off against Gustavus on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
