Two Late Goals Cost Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/07/23)---Just when it looked like Concordia was headed to a 2-2 tie against Augsburg after freshman Owen Gallo tied the game with 6:27 left in the second half, the Auggies scored a pair of goals in a span of 3:08 and came away with a 4-2 win.

The Cobbers battled back from a 2-1 deficit early in the second period of play to tie the game on Gallo's fifth goal of the year, but a penalty kick at 84:21 proved to be the game-winning goal. Augsburg would add a fourth at 87:29 to push the final deficit to two goals.

The loss slides Concordia's overall record to 4-6-1 in all games. CC is 1-4-1 in MIAC games. Augsburg remains unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-2. They are 7-2-3 overall.

The Cobbers got on the board first when Gannon Brooks scored on a penalty kick with only 37 seconds left in the first half. Junior Leo Dunor drew the spot kick when he beat a defender on the right wing and was taken down just inside the end line in the penalty area.

Brooks pulled the change up on the penalty kick and knocked home a slow roller into the left corner of the net. The goal was Brook's fifth of the year, giving CC a 1-0 lead at the break.

Augsburg would score their four goals in the second half in groups of two. The first tandem started in the 53rd minute of play and was followed by a second strike only 1:34 later.

Gallo tied the game at 83:33 before the Auggies scored 48 seconds later on a penalty kick. It was the seventh penalty kick conceded by the Cobbers this year, which ties a program record for penalty kicks allowed in a year. Concordia also gave up seven spot kicks in 2012.

Augsburg held a 20-10 edge in total shots and a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Cobber goalie Jensen Waltz made five saves.
