Spirited College Soccer Game Settled Late In Second Half

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/09/22)---In one of the most spirited games of the season, Concordia went back-and-forth with unbeaten Viterbo, before giving up the game-winning goal in the final 13:30 of play and lost 2-1.

The Cobbers led 1-0 at the halftime break, but then the V-Hawks tied the contest in the sixth minute of the second period and netted the game winner at the 77:53 mark.

Concordia (2-9-1) had several quality chances in the first 40 minutes of play. The Cobbers finally got on the board at 41:53 when sophomore defender Liam Weiler got on the end of a serve from Telvin Vah and headed home the opening strike of the game.

The goal in the 42nd minute of play was Weiler's first collegiate strike, and would give CC a 1-0 lead at the break.

Viterbo (11-0-0) posted the equalizer at 50:05 on a shot from 10 yards out. The V-Hawks took a quick free kick from midfield, found an attacker in a 1 v. 1 situation and he was able to fire a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

The game would get heated in the final 35 minutes of play. The two teams combined for seven yellow cards in the second half as both squads were battling for the win.

The Cobbers caught a bad break on the game winner. A shot from one of the Viterbo players from 15 yards out was blocked, but the ball caromed off the Concordia defender and ricocheted past Jensen Waltz.

Concordia would have a pair of chances from inside the penalty area in the final 7-minutes, but were never able to get the equalizer. Freshman Yousif Alshihmani had an in-close header stopped, and then Mason Weigel connected on a volley from the left side of the net that was saved by the V-Hawks keeper.

Walt, who was starting his first game of the season, played the best game of his collegiate career. He made several diving stops and did a solid job of controlling the penalty area. He finished the game with seven stops.

Concordia was outshot 15-7 in total shots and 9-5 in shots on goal. Vah led CC with a pair of shots.
