Barrage Of Shots But No Goals In 0-0 Tie With St. Mary's

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/01/22)---Concordia put everything but the kitchen sink on goal in their game with St. Mary's. The Cobbers posted a season-high 12 shots on goal, including a penalty shot, but couldn't get a ball past the goalkeeper and battled to a 0-0 tie with the Cardinals.

The tie is the first of the year for Concordia who earns its fourth league point and moves to 1-2-1 in the MIAC. CC is 2-7-1 in all games. St. Mary's records its third draw of the season and is now 3-5-3 in all games and 0-3-1 in league play.

The Cobbers' barrage of shots on goal started early as freshman Yousif Alshihmani had two good chances inside the 6-yard box get stopped by SMU goalie Daniel Sessler. The Cobber pressure would continue for the rest of the first half as CC outshot the Cardinals 9-3 in the opening period of play.

Concordia stepped up the offensive push in the second half and recorded 14 total shots with eight on frame.

The two biggest chances came in a span of two minutes midway through the period. The first came from sophomore Mason Weigel who found himself all alone at the top of the penalty area. After a Cardinals' defender headed the ball out of the middle of the box, Weigel ran on to the ball and absolutely crushed a 1-time volley that was labeled for the bottom left corner of the net. Sessler made a full-out dive to his right and deflected the ball around the post and into the corner of the field.

The Cobbers would come up with their best chance at the 73:39 mark when Weigel took possession of the ball just inside the penalty area on the left wing. Weigel pushed the ball past the defender, and was taken down by a slide tackle as he attempted to go around the SMU player.

Concordia sent team-leading scorer Telvin Vah to take the ensuing penalty kick, but his well-taken spot kick was turned back by Sessler.

The Cobbers put up two more shots in the final 12-minutes of play but couldn't come up with the game winner.

Concordia held a 22-9 advantage in total shots and a 12-3 margin in shots on goal.

Alshihmani led all players with eight total shots and five shots on frame.

Cobber goalie Erick Torres made three saves to post his second shutout of the season.

UP NEXT: Concordia will travel to St. Peter to take on No.7-ranked Gustavus on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 p.m. The Cobbers will then host Viterbo in the final non-conference game of the year on Sunday, Oct. 9.
