Early-Period Goals Are Costly In Conference Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn.(9/15/21)---The first three minutes of each proved to be costly for the Cobbers in the MIAC opener at Macalester. Concordia gave up a single goal in the opening three minutes of the first half and then two more at the start of the second period and lost 4-1.

The defeat marked the first time this season that Concordia has lost on the road. CC is now 2-4-0 in all games and 2-1-0 in away contests. Macalester moves to 3-3-0 for the season.

Concordia gave up the first early-half goal at the 2:55 mark of the opening period of play. One of the Scot attackers was able to get behind the CC defense off of a bouncing ball and buried the subsequent breakaway in the left corner of the net.

The Cobbers were able to find their offensive rhythm midway through the first half and started to pressure the Macalester goal on a consistent basis.

Senior Nate Weaver tied the game in the 31st minute of play when he took control of the ball 35 yards outside the Scot goal. He then teed up the ball and curled a shot over the keepers' head and into the left side netting. The goal at 30:07 was Weaver's third of the season and 24th of his career.   

The teams went to the break tied at 1-1 with Concordia holding an 8-6 lead in shots, a 5-2 edge in shots on goal and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.

The game completely changed in the first 2:06 of the second half as a pair of Macalester attackers were able to get behind the Concordia defense. The Scots took the lead at 46:01 and then seized control of the game with a second strike at 47:06.

Macalester finished of the scoring with a fourth tally at the 77.29 mark.

Both teams finished with 13 total shots. The Scots held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal, while CC had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Weaver had a game-high six total shots and five shots on goal.

Freshman goalie Jensen Waltz made three saves in his first collegiate start.

UP NEXT: Concordia will return home and take on St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 12:30 p.m. The Saints are 3-3-0 on the season.
