Second Half Sigh Of Relief

STORY LINE: Concordia scored four consecutive goals in the second half to overcome a 1-0 halftime and beat Viterbo 4-2 in a non-conference game in La Crosse, Wis. The Cobbers got goals a pair of strikes from freshman TJ Anderson and scored all four goals in a span of 18 minutes in the second stanza to stop a five-game losing streak and earn their fourth victory of the year.

RECORDS: The Cobbers are now 4-7-0 on the season and the win ups their non-conference record to 4-2 for the year. Viterbo has their 1-game win streak come to a close and moves to 2-7-1.

FIRST HALF REWIND: It looked like Concordia might be rewinding the same story line from their previous five games in the first half. The Cobbers put up 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes of play but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Things were made worse for CC when they gave up a goal in the 19th minute of play on the Hawks' first shot of the game.

SECOND HALF SIGH OF RELIEF: Concordia finally got on the board courtesy of a corner kick. Junior Noah Gjesdahl served the ball into the penalty area where Henry Schaefer was able to rise above the defense and head home his first goal of the year. The game-tying goal at 51:35 released they flood gates for the CC offense. Freshman TJ Anderson would put up two straight goals at the 55:30 and 64:59 marks. The tallies were Anderson's first of his collegiate career.  The second of Anderson's strikes was the game winner and was assisted by Sam Gess. Gess would go on to finish off the Concordia quartet of goals when he converted a penalty kick at 69:32. The PK was Gess' first goal of the season.

SEASON SHOT CHART TOPPER: Concordia finished the game with 27 total shots and 13 shots on goal. Both totals are season highs for the Cobbers. CC also had a season-best six corner kicks in the game. Not surprisingly, Sam Gess and TJ Anderson led the Cobbers with four shots each.

A WIN IN RELIEF: Sophomore goalie Jackson Carr entered the game in the 21st minute of play and allowed a single goal in the final 69:49 of play to earn the win. It was his fourth victory of the year.

UP NEXT: Concordia will head back into conference play this week when they play at defending MIAC champion St. Thomas on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. The Tommies are 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the league and are coming off a 5-1 win over Carthage on Sunday.
