Second-Half Stumble

Second-Half Stumble

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/02/13)—Concordia's bid to upset playoff bound St. John's was derailed in a 15-minute span in the second half. The Cobbers gave up a trio of goals at the start of the second period and fell 5-0 on Saturday.

In a strange twist of statistics, the Cobbers wound up outshooting the Johnnies 12-11 in the game but could never put the ball in the back of the net.

Concordia finishes up the 2013 season with a 5-12-1 overall record and a 2-8-0 mark in the MIAC. St. John's will head into the conference tournament with an 8-6-3 record in all games and a 6-2-2 mark in league play.

The Cobbers had the run of play in the first half and created more chances to score but could never finish off one of the opportunities. Sophomore wing Dami Adegunle raced past the SJU defense on the right wing but his breakaway shot in the 5th minute skipped just wide of the left post.

Concordia then had a goalmouth scramble in the 14th minute with Adegunle and Alex Cyusa having a chance to get a shot from in close but the Johnnie keeper and defense was able to clear the ball just before the ball crossed the line.

The game turned in the 30th minute when St. John's was able to break down the right wing and then a shot/cross attempt found an attacker on the back post for the easy goal.

Concordia was never able to get on track in the second half and gave up the decisive three goals starting at the 53:07 mark.

The Cobbers kept pressing for a goal in the final 20 minutes of play but each chance was either saved or just put over the crossbar.

St. John's held a slim 8-7 edge in shots on goal while Concordia had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Cobber goalie Peter Runquist capped his career with a three-save performance. SJU split the keeper duties. Ryan Brutger played the first 70 minutes and made five saves to pick up the win while Alec Almquist stopped two shots in the final 20 minutes.
